Road 13 — Luang Prabang — Phou Khoun by bike

Just happy because we found such a beautiful place for khin kan suai (lunch)

Instead of going from Luang Prabang directly to the road 13, we decide to leave the city in southern direction and cycle via Donekang to "13". We are rewarded with little traffic, mostly moderate climbs and a small pass with a refreshing downhill ride afterwards. After about an hour we turn onto road 13 and shortly after that we leave the turnoff to Kuang Si waterfall unnoticed. Neither of us are fans of mass tourism and its attractions, our highlight is the nature, the daily life, the people, the encounters, the laughter of the locals, the market, the food, water buffalos and dog gangs, the snake on the road, the monkey gang at the roadside, the fog in the morning, the breaking sun, the red dust roads or the sandy paths of Savannakhet.

At the end of the day, in the middle of the second big climb, we discover after some time a beautiful, somewhat unusual place for our mosquito tent. An empty market stall, just before a village.Thismeans we can refill our supplies directly the next morning and I hope for hot water for my instant coffee.

One hundred meters in front of our market stand there are two small houses where you can take a shower. Showering is not quite right. Next to the standing toilet there is a water basin in which a flat plastic bowl floats. With it you scoop water and pour the cold, refreshing water over your head. I have been loving this since my two week forced stay in the IDC prison in Bangkok in 2015.

Costs for the fun? 2.000 Kip, the equivalent of 20 Cent, which we pay an old man, who probably finances his meager life with this and the sale of vegetables.

When I pay, he points to his aching knee. I can help him and give him a proper portion of my marmot ointment from South Tyrol, which I have been carrying with me for two years for my old bones.

The next morning we are woken by the chatter of Laotian boys. As a reward, each of the three boys gets a power bar to take with them on their way. We pack up and start the day. In the next village there is a little disappointment for me: there is no hot water and therefore no coffee this morning.

Two hours are needed for the further climb in the morning freshness.
That putting up a tent even behind concrete masts can be fatal becomes clear to us as we pass an accident site where a truck or bus probably crashed into the ground. Probably the driver was asleep or drunk.

Towards the end of the day I am a bit surprised when a sign "Phou Khoun - 10 km" appears at the roadside. I actually thought that we couldn't make it that day. But we are tired and agree that we will pitch our tent if there should be a pleasant opportunity.

But we don't find anything on our last departure on this day. There is nothing else to do, we have to manage another three hundred meters of altitude difference. Again my chain jumps off. But in the meantime it has widened so much that I can put it on again without having to remove the rear wheel.

At dusk we reach Phou Khoun. With this we have done more than 105 km and a little more than 1.600 meters of altitude difference. A new record for sand.

The reward is one of the most beautiful places where I have ever pitched a tent.
